How to Style a Decorative Riser for Every Season
If there is one home decor piece I find myself using over and over again, it’s a decorative riser!
I’ve DIY’d quite a few of them over the years in different shapes, sizes and styles. I love how something so simple can completely change the look of a little grouping of decor.
A riser adds height, helps a favorite piece stand out and can turn a few simple items into a display that looks like it belongs together.
But one of my favorite things about them is how versatile they are. The same riser can move from room to room and change right along with the seasons.
Where Can You Use a Decorative Riser?
Pretty much anywhere!
In the kitchen, use one beside the stove for an oil bottle, salt and pepper, a small plant or seasonal accent. Near the sink, group your soap dispenser, lotion and a little greenery together. They’re also perfect for a coffee bar.
In a bathroom, a smaller riser can hold soap and lotion, a candle, a small plant or pretty jars filled with everyday necessities.
And on a shelf, mantel, entry table or dining table, a riser is an easy way to create different heights in a display. Try a candle, vase, small sign or plant on top, then add greenery or another decorative piece beside it.
One little tip: everything doesn’t have to sit perfectly ON the riser. Let greenery spill off the side, lean a small sign behind it or place another piece beside it. Think of the riser as part of the whole grouping.
Style Your Risers Through the Seasons
This is probably my favorite part!
You don’t need completely different decor every few months. Start with a riser you love and change what you put on and around it as the seasons change.
Spring
Think bunnies, flowers, greenery, carrots, birds and pretty pastel accents. Even a simple pot of faux tulips can look completely different when you give it a little height.
Summer
Bring in bright florals, lemons, bees, patriotic pieces or simple greenery. This is also a great time to keep things light and let the riser itself be part of the display.
Fall
Pumpkins, candles, fall leaves and warm colors make it so easy to create a cozy little grouping.
And sometimes the riser itself can become part of the seasonal decor!
I recently made this fall riser using one of our 6 x 12 framed wood backgrounds. I flipped it over, added one of the napkins from our Orange Autumn bundle and finished it with little feet and a few extra details.

Christmas and Winter
Mini trees, houses, snowmen, candles, bells and greenery are perfect for risers. After Christmas, remove the obvious holiday pieces and keep the trees, greenery, candles and snowflakes for an easy winter display. You could even use an old sled as a riser.
Make the Riser Part of the Decor
The things you put ON the riser aren’t the only way to change its look.
Paint it. Stain it. Distress it. Add feet, wood beads or half rounds. Decoupage it with a pretty napkin. Add stripes, checks or a stencil.
You can keep your riser neutral so it works all year, or make the riser itself a seasonal statement piece.
That’s one of the things I love about DIY. You get to make it fit your home and your style.
And if you get tired of it later? Paint it again!

There really aren’t any rules! Start with a wood base, add some feet and then make it completely your own.
