How to Create a Sunflower Sign Using Wooden Biscuits

How to Create a Sunflower Sign Using Wooden Biscuits

If you’ve been around here a while, you know I love a good DIY that looks impressive but is actually simple to make. This week’s project checks all the boxes: a three-dimensional sunflower sign that’s cheerful, rustic, and made with unexpected supplies — wooden biscuits!

Supplies You’ll Need

Step 1: Lay Out Your Flowers

I started by creating two flowers — one larger and one smaller. For the larger flower, I used the #20 biscuits. For the smaller, I used the #10 biscuits.

Each flower got two layers of petals: Base layer: 9 biscuits in a circle. Top layer: 9 more biscuits, offset so they sit in between the petals on the bottom layer.

Before committing, I placed the wooden circles in the center to make sure the proportions worked.

Step 2: Paint the Petals

To make painting easier, I laid out all 36 biscuits sticky-side down on strips of painter’s tape. This kept them from sliding around while I worked.

I gave each petal two coats of yellow paint.

Once dry (I hurried the drying process along by using my heat gun), I brushed on Waverly Antiquing Glaze and wiped it back to add depth and a little rustic charm.

Step 3: Assemble the Flowers

Once everything was dry, I started re-assembling the flowers on the sign background.

Here’s my glue trick:

A dab of hot glue for instant hold.

A line of wood glue underneath for long-term durability.

I glued the base layer first, then the top layer, and finally the circle centers.

Wipe away any excess glue.

Styling Ideas

  • Hang it in your entryway to greet guests with sunshine.
  • Add it to a gallery wall for a pop of color.
  • Prop it on a mantle with other fall décor.
